1. Poveglia Island – Italy
As of today Poveglia Island is believed to be the most haunted island in the world. It is located between Venice and Lido in the Venetian Lagoon, northern Italy. Today hardly anyone visits the island other than to harvest the vineyards that thrive upon the countless bodies and ash mixed with the soil. Even the local fisherman try to steer clear of the island because of the many human remains they still catch in their nets. The terrifying history of Poveglia Island began during the Roman Era when it was used to isolate plague victims from the general population. The plagued people were shipped off to Poveglia Island, people lived out the last of their wretched lives together until they croaked. Since the island already wreaked of death, the next time an epidemic came along, barely alive bodies were dumped there and burned in mass graves.
In 1922, the island became home to a mental hospital where a doctor allegedly experimented on patients with crude lobotomies. He later threw himself from the hospital tower after claiming he’d been driven mad by ghosts. The island has been featured on the paranormal shows Ghost Adventures and Scariest Places on Earth.
2) The Island Of The Dolls
The Island Of The Dolls is situated in Xochimilco, Mexico, in the heart of the old Aztec canals. In the 1950’s, a man named Don Julian Santana Barrera made the small island is home. Soon after he arrived he reported hearing the voice of a little girl who is said to have previously drowned there while playing with her 2 friends. It is after that frightful experience that Don Julian began bringing dolls to his island, hanging them in every trees he could find in a effort to appease the ghost of the young girl and possibly even, some ancient evil spirits wandering the canal. The locals claim that over time, the dolls became charged with the girl’s paranormal energy and many who have passed by the island at night have seen the dolls move and whisper.
3. Hart Island
Hart Island, sometimes referred to as Hart’s Island, is run by the NYS Department of Corrections and unless you are a convict, you wont be allowed to set a foot on it. Even the press is not allowed access except for a few guided tours granted over the years. Family members of those buried in the cemetery are now allowed a supervised visit inside a small gazebo near the dock, and that’s if they meet the strict requirements necessary.
