4. Diyarbakir Prison

Diyarbakır Prison is a prison located in south-east Turkey. It became notorious for the cruelty inflicted upon the inmates and dire living conditions. Some of the scenes described by former inmates include guards tying the inmates’ genitals to each other with a rope and ordering them to run, forcing them to eat human excrement from sewers and sexually abusing them using truncheons. Some inmates also claimed that their teeth were broken when guards inserted truncheons into their mouths, ordered them to bite down and then kicked the truncheons. Former inmates also accused the prison doctor of putting saliva taken from prisoners afflicted with tuberculosis into the meals distributed in the wards.
